Attempted hit and run leaves Jacksonville High School student in critical condition

UPDATED STORY: Tasia D. White arrested in the hit and run incident outside of Jacksonville High today.

Reports began to come into The Onslow Beat around 7:15am this morning with much emotion about a Jacksonville High School student being struck by a vehicle in or about the crosswalk on Henderson Dr. this morning and the vehicle left the scene. One citizen who was in the area this morning said, “it looked really bad….life flight landed on the field and took him.”  Parents have been concerned about the safety of this crosswalk for a long time. Their concerns aren’t because students don’t use the flashing signage to alert drivers they’re crossing, but because drivers have been observed passing through the lanes while the lights are flashing and students crossing.

Jacksonville Police Department issued a press release this morning with information on this traffic incident that occurred at 6:50AM this morning on Henderson Drive in the vicinity of Jacksonville High School. One student pedestrian was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. Officers quickly located the vehicle and apprehended the driver. Charges are pending.

“The pedestrian has been transported for medical treatment,” said Deputy Chief Ashely Weaver. “We are in the preliminary stages of this investigation and are unable to release additional information at this time.”

Police Chief Mike Yaniero urges drivers to use caution in school zones as they remain a place where drivers should be on alert each school day. “The improved pedestrian crossing has resulted in greater safety for the students, but drivers have a responsibility to obey the law for the crossing,” said Chief Yaniero. As is customary, a review will be made of the crossing.

There’s been no information released on the identity of the student at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer William Hollis, JPD Traffic Division, at 910-938-6435 or whollis@jacksonvillenc.gov or citizens, may call Crime Stoppers at 910-938-3273 with information.
