Independence Day Celebrations kick off today in the Coastal Region: Where to go and how to be safe

Independence Day is only one day away and celebrations begin here in the Coastal Region today! Where to go, when to go and how to be safe? Open it to read it. Be safe and have a joyous time with friends and family!

We are one day away from America’s biggest holiday, celebration preparations and locations are being determined if they haven’t been by now by our coastal citizens. Just in case you are one of those who is undecided, The Onslow Beat has put together a list of options for you to choose from in celebrating, spending time with your family and friends.

Independence Day falls on a Thursday this year, which usually gives for a long weekend for most military and some government offices.

Independence Day happenings through all 767 miles of Onslow County.  Before we get into the excitement, “Safety first!”

With the approach of the July 4th weekend, Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller asks all citizens to join him in making this Fourth of July holiday period a happy and enjoyable one for all.

Traditionally during the July 4th holiday, our highways experience one of the highest traffic flows of the year. The Sheriff reminds all residents to follow these safety tips:

• Always shift your attention every few seconds, constantly scanning the road ahead and behind you. Never blankly stare ahead nor fix your gaze on one point on the road.

• When passing an automobile, always glance at the ground beside the front wheel of the car you intend to pass. You will know instantly if the car is about to veer – giving you an extra few seconds to respond.

• You should pull out into the opposite lane of traffic when passing while you are still well behind the car in front. This should give you some time and space to build up speed and will enable you to pull back into your own lane should the need arise. Never cut abruptly out of your lane into the opposite lane when passing.

• Always signal your intentions with your brake lights, turn signals, horn and/or headlights so that other drivers will see you well before you change course.

• Drivers should always “aim high” in steering. That is, you should glance frequently at points well ahead of you. Not only will this help your steering, but it will also help you check the position of vehicles in front of you as well as on-coming ones.

• Never follow too close. Remember that, as your speed increases, it takes you substantially longer to stop. Also remember that it’s good to have an extra cushion of space in front of you if you’re being tail-gated, on a slippery road, or in low visibility conditions.

“Lastly, I would remind all motorists to practice the Golden Rule when driving. Be courteous and tolerant of other drivers. Please don’t get angry with bad drivers or reckless ones – just get out of their way,” Sheriff Miller said in closing, “Let’s make this summer a safe one on the roads in Onslow County.”

WATER SAFETY:

  • If no lifeguard is on duty, do not let children swim unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult who knows lifesaving techniques and first aid.
  • Post CPR instructions and directions to call 9-11 or your local emergency number in the pool area.
  • Look around the pool area to be certain lifesaving devices are readily available for emergency use.
  • Be sure covers are installed on all drains of swimming pools and wading pools. The suction created by the pool’s circulating pumps can be very dangerous unless it is reduced by covers.
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first. Go to the edge of the pool and scan the entire pool, bottom and surface, as well as the surrounding pool area.
  •  To reduce the risk of eye, ear, nose or throat infection from contaminated water, swim only in poos in which water quality is properly maintained. The water should appear crystal clear, be continuously circulated and be maintained a t a level that allows free overflow into the gutter or skimmer. There should not be a strong odor of ammonia or chlorine.
  • Take frequent breaks (about once an hour) where everyone gets out of the water, drinks water, reapplies water resistant sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and rests.

BEACH SAFETY:

  • Swim in a supervised, marked area with a lifeguard present, and swim with others. Never swim alone.
  • If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free of the rip current and then head toward shore.
  • Watch out for the “dangerous too’s”- too tired, too cold, too far from safety, too much sun, too much strenuous activity.
  • Look for water that is reasonably clear and free of floating materials and odors. Avoid swimming at beaches where there are large populations of ducks, geese or gulls. The waste produced by these birds causes high bacteria levels in the water.
  • Look for movement in the water; it helps keep the water clean. Do not swim in stagnant or still water.
  • Do not swim at any beach right after a heavy rain. Runoff following a heavy rain may result in a high bacteria level.
  • When diving at a beach, exercise extreme caution. Beach water is not as clear as water in a pool, so underwater obstructions may not be visible.
  • Avoid having beach water in your mouth or nose.

Sheriff Miller states, “Following these precautions will help the children and citizens of Onslow County stay safe and healthy this holiday weekend and throughout the summer.”

Ocean City Jazz Fest Kicks Off on July 4th

Humphrey Farm is turning up the excitement for Independence Day weekend

THE ONSLOW BEAT EXPERIENCE
The Onslow Beat went out to Humphrey Farm for Emerald Isle Productions first debut event on the farm last Saturday, and it was a full family affair that was enjoyed by all. This was an event I took my husband and kids to get a full effect to convey the feedback from them to the public. We all know children are brutally honest with matters of satisfaction.

Our son, age 7, we had to tell him to eat and get hydrated beyond what water he’d gulped down likely in the splash zone area. Gross, I know, but he’s “all boy.” He didn’t want to leave and told us on the drive home, “that was a blast. I wish we could go to that farm every weekend!”

Our daughter, age 11, and not a huge water fan, really enjoyed herself as well. She was between the foam pit and the splash pad for water play, just as all of the other kids. She said the foam was the best and she hoped at that point, next time they’d do slime as mentioned over the loudspeakers. Then she came for a mega Jenga game and demanded mom play with her. There are games set up around the yard of the farm under open covered barns with tables. (View the video below)

My husband and I ended up feeling like we had a little date night with childcare on site. We played a game under the covered area, took a stroll around the yard together, and checked out the vendors. We further went on to enjoy a bite to eat and back to the picnic table area to talk and enjoy the mere fact that at that moment we had sheer peace in parenting, winning with a date night we didn’t even expect since the idea was solely to take the kids for their enjoyment and I could work. Can you say, “WINNING!”?

There is corn-hole set up for kids and adults, horseshoes and more games for good competitive fun with family and friends. There was a mega connect four game that a young toddler was playing with an older sibling. Music of all genres filled the air, new school and old school from the DJ. Some farm-goers took the crowd on with karaoke performances between selections.

There was BBQ sold on site from Sm’Oaked BBQ, serving beef brisket, pork spare ribs with coleslaw and beans as sides, packed in with a slice of bread to go with. Now let me tell you all, I generally don’t like most BBQ in any restaurant or on any food truck, I’m just not impressed usually. However, let me tell you, this was the most tender brisket I have had from a vendor here in the eastern North Carolina region, a perfect smoked flavor, and seasonings, highly impressive. On the other hand of it, I wasn’t a fan of the sides, and that’s only me being me- a native Western NC Girl through and through. Generally, I am not too fond of any BBQ vendors side items; they’re often store-bought, lack the touch of southern seasoning to take you anywhere near granny’s house in your mind. They offer sauces and salt and pepper packets on the side in plastic ware so you can apply yourself. I still give them 4/5 stars just for the brisket, excellent pricing, generous portions, and a great customer service experience.


Around the farm, there’s a variety of market shops to patronize, fresh goods, vegetables, Amish bread, crafts, free wine tastings and of course wine to purchase if you like. There was the best strawberry lemonade I’ve tasted in all of Onslow County perfectly blended, not too sour, not too sweet and I could taste the berries. Seriously, there should be an award for that.

Perdue Foods LLC issued a recall for over 30K pounds of chicken products

Perdue Foods LLC., a Bridgewater, Va. establishment, is recalling approximately 31,703 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically pieces of bone material, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2019 – Perdue Foods LLC., a Bridgewater, Va. establishment, is recalling approximately 31,703 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically pieces of bone material, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

This is the third recall on chicken products from Perdue Organics this year.

The fully cooked chicken products were produced on March 21, 2019. The following products are subject to recall:

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website.

Johnsonville is recalling an estimated 95K pounds of ready-to-eat jalapeño cheddar sausage products due to possible contamination.

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2019 – Johnsonville, LLC., a Sheboygan Falls, Wis. establishment, is recalling approximately 95,393 pounds of its ready-to-eat jalapeño cheddar smoked sausage products that may be contaminated with extraneous material, specifically hard green plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The jalapeño cheddar smoked sausage items were produced and packaged on March 12 and 13, 2019. The following products are subject to recall:

• 14-oz. film, vacuum packages containing “Johnsonville JALAPEÑO CHEDDAR Smoked Sausage” with a “Best By 06/09/2019” date on the back of the package.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 34224” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped nationwide and internationally.

The problem was discovered when the company notified FSIS that they received a consumer complaint regarding green hard plastic in the product.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Food Outlook: UPDATE- Contamination recall extended for Tyson Foods products- 12M lbs of chicken

Tyson Foods, Inc. expanded a food recall for nearly 12M pounds of chicken products due to continued contamination concerns. #FoodSafety #ContaminationConcerns

UPDATE: Tyson Foods, Inc., released a notice of a recall expansion of the March 21, 2019 recall that consisted of  69,093 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products. The recent call of expansion for this recall now includes more information to include another 11,760,424 pounds of product.

(WASHINGTON, May, 4, 2019)- Tyson Foods, Inc., a Rogers, Ark. establishment, is recalling approximately 11,829,517 million pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically pieces of metal, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip items were produced on various dates from Oct. 1, 2018 through March 8, 2019 and have “Use By Dates” of Oct. 1, 2019 through March 7, 2020. The chart contains a list of the products subject to recall.[View Labels (PDF only)]

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-7221” on the back of the product package. These items were shipped to retail and Department of Defense locations nationwide, for institutional use nationwide and to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The problem was discovered when FSIS received two consumer complaints of extraneous material in the chicken strip products. FSIS is now aware of six complaints during this time frame involving similar pieces of metal with three alleging oral injury.

Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

PREVIOUS (3/28/19): Oftentimes we see sudden spikes in contamination and health risk warnings flooding the media, social media networks and might even say, “Air sandwich plain please…” feeling that there’s nearly nothing safe anymore. Let’s take a look at some recent recalls that actually affect N.C.

On March 13, 2019, Butterball, LLC in Mount Olive, North Carolina recalled approximately 78,164 pounds of raw ground turkey products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund. The NC based plant is 675,000-square-foot facility outside Raleigh is the largest turkey processing plant in the world, processing 17 million turkeys a year, according to Butterball. This recall stems from just one day of production.

Recalled ground turkey products were produced on July 7, 2018, and were shipped to institutional and retail locations nationwide.

There was a high-risk factor that led to the company recall and CDC reports where six people in three states have become ill; one was hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). How common is salmonella?

CDC estimates that
Salmonella causes
approximately 1.2 million
illnesses and 450 deaths
every year in the United
States. Salmonella infection
is most common in June,
July, and August.

Symptoms to look for: 

The CDC reports, “Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps 12-72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.”

This is the third recall involving ground turkey in five months. In both November and December 2018, Jennie-O recalled packages of ground turkey for possible contamination with Salmonella Reading. Additionally, the CDC has been investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Reading linked to several types of raw turkey products. Neither investigation has been closed per any reports made available.

The Onslow Beat did attempt to get a specific list of stores and locations the turkey products went to in our state but was not successful. FSIS did not provide a list of stores or states where the turkey was sold, but the manager of public relations at Butterball, reported that the turkey was shipped to the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

AdvancePierre Foods, Inc., an Enid, Okla. establishment, is recalling approximately 20,373 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) beef patties that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically soft purple plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on April 2nd.

The frozen RTE flame broiled beef patties were produced on Nov. 30, 2018. The following products are subject to recall:

• 14.06-lb. cases containing three bags with 30 pieces for a total of 90 portions of “CN FULLY COOKED FLAMEBROILED BEEF PATTIES CARAMEL COLOR ADDED” with case code 155-525-0 and package code 8334. 

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 2260E” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to food service locations nationwide. While the product was distributed to schools, it resulted from a commercial sale and was not part of food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program.                                

The problem was discovered on April 1, 2019 after the firm received two consumer complaints regarding soft purple plastic found in the product.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.  

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in food service freezers. Food service locations who have purchased these products are urged not to serve or consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Holy Guacamole! Avocado recall for six states including NC

Holy Guacamole! The recalled products have been distributed in six states and NC is one of the six – California-grown conventional and organic avocados — were packed at Henry Avocado’s packing facility in California and distributed in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. All shipments from the packing facility are subject to the recall (Henry Avocado did not begin packing there until late January 2019). Avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not subject to the recall and may continue to be sold and consumed.

Saturday, March 23, 2019, Henry Avocado Corporation issued a press release that the company is voluntarily recalling California-grown whole avocados sold in bulk at retail stores because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Henry Avocado is issuing this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during a routine government inspection at its California packing facility. There are no reported illnesses associated with this recall.

 

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled products – California-grown conventional and organic avocados — were packed at Henry Avocado’s packing facility in California and distributed in Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. All shipments from the packing facility are subject to the recall (Henry Avocado did not begin packing there until late January 2019). Avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not subject to the recall and may continue to be sold and consumed.

Henry Avocado is contacting all affected customers to confirm that the recalled products are immediately removed from store shelves. For conventional products purchased at retail, consumers can identify the recalled products by the “Bravocado” stickers. Henry Avocado organic products do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker. Instead, those products are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker. Retailers can identify Henry Avocado organic products by the bar code on the stickers.

Salty Sistas give back beyond their food truck in the first week

We often see new businesses open and come with a community motivated pitch of supporting those who support them, giving back to the community and all the bells and whistles but we never see the fruits of their labor as marketed. Well, Salty Sistas food truck has put their money where their mouth is, well technically, other mouths are. Their first big weekend at The Crooked Lotus last weekend was a hit and they’ve “tithed” ten percent of their earnings back into the CHEW Program in the community at Dixon Elementary.

The Onslow Beat Digital Reporter, Melissa Oakley asked one Salty Sista Jeanette Rivera, “what motivated you, ladies, to implement community service into your business? Aren’t you concerned about profiting before grand-opening to grow and maybe implement some services at the peak of tourism season?” Rivera responded,

I really wanted the community to see that we are not just about making money. We are two women with a passion and a love for cooking. But it is just as important to us to give back In any of the communities we are working and we want to be able to give back. Our first soft opening we said that we would take a portion of the profits and give to the chew program at Dixon Elementary. We are women of our word. Digital Reporter, Melissa Oakley also had the opportunity to be a food critic for Salty Sistas testing the lobster roll (3oz), the lobster hushpuppies and the lobster poutine. Lobster roll comes with a choice of butter or mayo, can be served warm or cold, side of coleslaw and a bag of chips. The lobster hushpuppies are served fresh, fried, golden perfection with a side of special sauce, “Cajun Happiness” sauce that the ladies just wouldn’t give up the recipe for. There was also attempt to get the ladies kids, spouses and the employees to spill it without any success. If you try the sauce or have tried the sauce, you will understand why the recipe needs to be released, It’s absolutely delicious and paired perfectly with the flavors in the batter of the hushpuppies and the chunks of lobster. They could literally sell bottles of the sauce it is so delicious! “Cajun Happiness” is a perfect name for this sauce as it is truly, “c’est si bon!”.

UPDATE: FNS benefits to end in February if shutdown continues PREVIOUS: DHHS Monitoring funds…

UPDATE:

Because of the federal shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has instructed states to issue February’s Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) benefits by Sunday, Jan. 20. Benefits would normally be available to families between the 3rd and 21st of February.

“We are working closely with county departments of social services and our federal partners to ensure participants and retailers have little to no interruption of FNS services due to the shutdown,” said Tara Myers, NCDHHS Deputy Secretary for Human Services.

FNS is a federal food assistance program that provides low-income families with funds to purchase food needed for a nutritional, adequate diet. Once February’s FNS funds are distributed, they will be available for use. However, participants should be aware that since there will be no FNS benefits issued in the month of February, they should plan accordingly.

Despite the federal shutdown, DHHS projects to have sufficient funds through February, not only for FNS, but also for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC). However, if the federal shutdown continues, funding for these services could run out after February.

The California farm linked to the Romaine Lettuce E-Coli infections have recalled other products as well. Adam’s Bro.’s Farming, Inc. issued a press release this week stating,

The FDA and CDC reported last week that E. Coli associated with the romaine lettuce outbreak had been detected in the sediment of a reservoir used in irrigation of the farm. There has not been any romaine lettuce shipped from the farm since Nov. 20, when the outbreak was originally identified, said the FDA.

There have been nearly 60 illnesses so far from the contaminated romaine, reported across 15 states, 23 of which were hospitalized. There are reports leading into Canada of additional illnesses. No deaths have been reported as a result of this contamination.

The CDC said the investigation is ongoing, and it is likely that this is not the only farm involved. Consumers are urged to avoid romaine lettuce grown on California’s Central Coast, specifically Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Barbara counties.

Siegel and Brill Law give information on E. coli bacteria (also Escherichia coli). “This is normally found in mammals’ intestines, including humans. Most strains are benign, but some can cause serious illness, most commonly by eating contaminated food.

Anyone can become ill by eating food contaminated with E. coli, but people with the highest risk of developing HUS include the very young and the very old, as well as anyone with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms are similar to those of other types of food poisoning:

  • fever
  • nausea
  • abdominal pain
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea, which can be bloody
  • loss of appetite
  • extreme fatigue
  • decreased urine output.”

Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. and FDA Deputy Commissioner Frank Yiannas on new findings and updated consumer recommendations related to the romaine lettuce E. coli O157:H7 outbreak investigation

On Nov. 20, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned the American public if a multi-state outbreak of E.coli O157:H7 linked to romaine lettuce and advised against eating any romaine lettuce on the market at that time. This week there are new reports.

On Nov. 20, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned the American public of a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 linked to romaine lettuce and advised against eating any romaine lettuce on the market at that time. The FDA then worked quickly with romaine producers and distributors who voluntarily withdrew the product from the market to help contain this new outbreak. This was an especially important step in advance of the Thanksgiving holiday. At the same time, we immediately launched a broad traceback investigation to determine the source of this outbreak.

We have new results to report from this investigation tracing the source of the contamination to at least one specific farm. Based on these and other new findings, we’re updating our recommendations for the romaine lettuce industry and consumers.

Shortly after our initial public warning, our traceback investigation was able to narrow down the scope of implicated product. Based on these initial findings, we immediately issued an updated public warning to consumers to avoid consuming romaine lettuce specifically from Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Ventura counties in California. This information about the implicated regions helped consumers avoid potentially affected product. The information was provided in conjunction with a voluntary agreement that we reached with industry to provide more specific labeling information on the origin and harvest date of romaine lettuce as it was shipped to the market.

By Nov. 23, the FDA Produce Safety Network, CDC, the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Food and Agriculture had assembled and deployed teams to inspect locations in California that were identified through the traceback investigation. The on-site investigations included farms and lettuce cooling facilities. Our teams have been on site at these locations continuously, collecting hundreds of samples for lab testing. These include soil, water and swab samples from surfaces and equipment. The majority of these results have tested negative for the outbreak strain.

The aim of this investigation is to rapidly find the cause of the contamination, what risks to consumers continue to persist, and how these potential hazards can be resolved.

Today, we’re announcing that we’ve identified a positive sample result for the outbreak strain in the sediment of a local irrigation reservoir used by a single farm owned and operated by Adam Bros. Farms in Santa Barbara County. The FDA will be sending investigators back to this farm for further sampling. It’s important to note that although this is an important piece of information, the finding on this farm doesn’t explain all illnesses and our traceback investigation will continue as we narrow down what commonalities this farm may have with other farms that are part of our investigation. While the analysis of the strain found in the people who got ill and the sediment in one of this farm’s water sources is a genetic match, our traceback work suggests that additional romaine lettuce shipped from other farms could also likely be implicated in the outbreak. Therefore, the water from the reservoir on this single farm doesn’t fully explain what the common source of the contamination. We are continuing to investigate what commonalities there could be from multiple farms in the region that could explain this finding in the water, and potentially the ultimate source of the outbreak.

This positive sample from the single farm was collected by the FDA and analyzed by the CDC and determined to match the outbreak strain of E. coli through Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis, the most precise DNA analysis available to us. Adams Bros. Farms is cooperating with the FDA in this outbreak investigation and we are able to confirm that this farm hasn’t shipped any romaine lettuce since Nov. 20. The company has committed to recalling products that may have come into contact with the agricultural water reservoir and we are working with the farm to determine how the contamination occurred and whether corrective actions are needed before their next growing season.

As of Dec. 13, our investigation yielded records from five restaurants in four different states that have identified 11 different distributors, nine different growers, and eight different farms as potential sources of contaminated romaine lettuce. Currently, no single establishment is in common across the investigated supply chains. This indicates that although we have identified a positive sample from one farm to date, the outbreak may not be explained by a single farm, grower, harvester, or distributor.

While this new information does not fully explain the outbreak, it does allow us to revise our recommendations for consumers slightly. Given the identification of the outbreak pathogen on the farm in Santa Barbara county, the farms identified in the traceback, and the fact that the lettuce on the market at the peak of the outbreak should be beyond shelf-life we feel there is no longer a reason for consumers to avoid romaine lettuce from San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz and Ventura Counties, in California, provided it was harvested after Nov. 23. If consumers, retailers, and food service facilities are unable to confirm that romaine lettuce products are from unaffected sources, we urge that these products not be purchased, or if the products have already purchased, they should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

Romaine lettuce that was harvested outside of Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Barbara Counties in California after Nov. 23 doesn’t appear to be related to the current outbreak. Hydroponically- and greenhouse-grown romaine also doesn’t appear to be related to the current outbreak. There’s no reason for consumers or retailers to avoid using romaine harvested from these sources.

Our investigation is ongoing. As of Dec. 13, this outbreak has resulted in 59 people becoming ill in 15 states, with the last reported illness onset date being Nov. 16.  The FDA, CDC, and our partners, are also coordinating the investigation with Canadian healthdisclaimer icon and food safety authorities who are also looking into a related outbreak.

Today’s update is a result of our ongoing, extensive traceback investigation with the CDC and our state partners. Traceback involves digging into records from the past to work backwards from the point of consumption or purchase of the product through the supply chain to the source. Since it’s common for people who become ill from a leafy green like romaine lettuce to have eaten the food frequently, a solid traceback investigation requires specific details about all the exposures a sick person had prior to becoming sick. So, identifying which exposures to trace back is complex and is the foundation of a successful traceback.

Once that foundation is laid, a traceback investigation often includes investigating retail establishments, suppliers, and distributors working our way back to the farm or farms that could have grown the lettuce that ended up in consumers meals and homes. It’s a labor-intensive task. It requires collecting and evaluating thousands of records while also trying to accurately document how the contaminated lettuce moved through the food supply chain to grocery stores, restaurants and other locations where it was sold or served to the consumers who became ill. We documented our extensive traceback efforts for the Spring 2018 E. Coli outbreak, to provide an example of the complexity and challenge of this type of investigation.

As we continue to investigate this outbreak, we are pleased with industry’s cooperation with our request for a “clean break” in the romaine lettuce supply available to consumers in the U.S. in order to purge the market of potentially contaminated romaine lettuce. Knowing the growing origin of produce will continue to play an important role in allowing consumers to avoid contaminated products and facilitating market withdrawals and tracebacks and why we previously called on improvements to labeling and traceability.

We’re able to report that consumers are starting to see romaine lettuce on the market labelled with the harvest origin of the romaine, along with the date of the harvest. This will improve the ability of the FDA to provide more targeted information to consumers in the event of a future outbreak of illness. We’ll continue to work with the leafy green industry on our task force to find solutions for long term labeling of romaine lettuce and other leafy greens for helping to identify products and ways to improve traceability.

This outbreak highlights the importance of moving forward with improvements in how we detect and respond to outbreaks of foodborne illness. Over the last decade, we’ve been able to link outbreaks to products more rapidly and contain the spread of illnesses faster than ever before. This owes to advances in technology that have allowed us to detect outbreaks of human illness and contamination events that may have never been previously identified. This means that in many instances we’ve been able to intervene earlier in the setting of outbreaks to reduce the number of people who are affected by a contaminated food.

We’ll continue to use advances in technology to improve our ability to track and trace products through the supply chain. We’ll be launching a comprehensive effort in early 2019 to advance our work in this area. This will help consumers get information more quickly to enable people to protect themselves and their families. We look forward to continuing our work with growers, processors, distributors and retailers in our shared efforts to protect consumers; and will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.

Autumn with Topsail festival final day Sunday, October 21st

Autumn with Topsail is always a fun time to be had on the beautiful Topsail Island. Live bands, dancing, libations, food trucks, juried arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor kids activities, and the famous Kiwanis pancake breakfasts!

The festival started in 1988 featuring a juried Artists’ and Crafts court with over 100 regional artists with work on display for sell.

This is definitely a great FUN adventure to go explore the gems of  Topsail Island such as the Missiles and More Museum where this grand event is held. Funds raised at this event support the Historical Society of Topsail Island and the museum. The Historic Assembly Building suffered some major damages from Hurricane Florence so the funds raised will greatly benefit keeping history alive and well on Topsail. The funds generally go to the maintanence, presevation and upkeep of the historic Assembly Building and the Missiles and More Museum.

The Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at the Historic Assembly Building for the final day of the festival will be Sunday morning from 8am-10am.

You can enjoy live musical entertainment from the Band of Oz this afternoon from 1pm-4pm, a variety of delicious food, beer, wine and lots of inflatables, crafts for children and much more!

Moving to Onslow County can be quite the shift for many people and families, especially military affiliated. Depending on where you’re from or previously stationed at, you might have been surrounded by a plethora of activities, amusement parks within a 100 mile radius, a mall with more than 60 retailers listed including the booth vendors, and maybe a good selection of night life options beyond a bar and a live band or DJ.

So, I am putting together a little compilation of the events coming up in Jacksonville, NC or surrounding areas.

I’m undecided on doing this weekly, biweekly or monthly. But we shall see, I have to check my schedules and merge to one.
